12. 火攻 화공
孫子曰 손자가말한다：凡火攻有五 무릇 화공에 다섯이 있다：一曰火人 하나는 주둔 병력을 불태우고，二曰火積 둘은 쌓인 군수 물자를불태우고，三曰火輜 셋은 군수 행렬을 불태고，四曰火庫 넷은 군수 창고를 불태우고，五曰火隊 다섯은 적병의 대열을 불태운다。
行火必有因 화공을 행하는 데 알맞은 수단이 있고，因必素具 수단은 반드시 평소 구비하라。發火有時 불을 놓는 데 때가 있고，起火有日불을 일으키는 데 날이 있다。時者 때는，天之燥也 날씨가 건조할 때다。日者 날은，月在 달이 箕 기、壁 벽、翼 익、軫也 진의별자리에 있는 날이다。凡此四宿者 무릇 이 네 별자리면，風起之日也 바람이 일어나는 날이다。
凡火攻 무릇화공은，必因五火之變而應之 반드시 다섯가지 불의 변화에 따라서 응해야 한다：火發於內 안에서 발화하면，則早應之於外 어서 밖에서응하라；火發而其兵靜者 발화해도 적병이 조용하면，待而勿攻 기다리지 치지마라，極其火力 화력이 극에 달하면，可從而從之 따를 만하면따르고，不可從則止 안 그러면 멈춰라。
火可發於外 밖에서 발화해도 되면，無待於內 안을 기다리지말고，以時發之 적시에 발화하고，火發上風 *상풍에서 불이 나면，無攻下風 *하풍에서 치지마라，晝風久 낮 바람은 오래 불고，夜風止 밤 바람은 곧 그친다。

凡火攻 In attacking with fire，必因五火之變而應之 one should be prepared to meet fivepossible developments，火發于內(1) When fire breaks out inside to enemy'scamp，則早應之于外 respond at once with an attack from without。火發而其兵靜者(2) Ifthere is an outbreak of fire, but the enemy's soldiers remainquiet，待而勿攻 bide your time and do not attack。極其火力(3) When the force ofthe flames has reached its height，可從而從之 follow it up with an attack, ifthat is practicable，不可從而止 if not, stay where you are。火可發于外(4) If it ispossible to make an assault with fire from without，無待于內 do not wait forit to break out within，以時發之 but deliver your attack at a favorablemoment。 火發上風(5) When you start a fire, be to windward of it ，無攻下風 Donot attack from the leeward，晝風久 A wind that rises in the daytime lastslong，夜風止 but a night breeze soon falls。凡軍必知五火之變 In every army, the fivedevelopments connected with fire must be known，以數守之 the movements ofthe stars calculated, and a watch kept for the proper days。故以火佐攻者明.Hence those who use fire as an aid to the attack showintelligence，以水佐攻者強 those who use water as an aid to the attack gain anaccession of strength，水可以絕 By means of water, an enemy may beintercepted，不可以奪 but not robbed of all his belongings。
夫戰勝攻取，而不修其攻者凶 Unhappy is the fate of one who tries to win his battles and succeedin his attacks without cultivating the spirit of enterprise，命曰費留 forthe result is waste of time and general stagnation。故曰 Hence thesaying：明主慮之The enlightened ruler lays his plans well ahead，良將修之 thegood general cultivates his resources，非利不動 Move not unless you see anadvantage，非得不用 use not your troops unless there is something to begained，非危不戰 fight not unless the position is critical。主不可以怒而興師 No rulershould put troops into the field merely to gratify his ownspleen，將不可以慍而致戰 no general should fight a battle simply out ofpique；合于利而動 If it is to your advantage, make a forward move，不合于利而止 ifnot, stay where you are。怒可以復喜 Anger may in time change togladness，慍可以復悅 vexation may be succeeded by content，亡國不可以復存 But akingdom that has once been destroyed can never come again intobeing，死者不可以復生 nor can the dead ever be brought back to life。故明君慎之 Hencethe enlightened ruler is heedful，良將警之 and the good general full ofcaution，此安國全軍之道也 This is the way to keep a country at peace and an armyintact。
